Designer jailed for escaping from lawful custody

Accra Oct. 29, GNA – A graphic designer, Alfred Kwasi Osei, who escaped with four other suspects from the Nungua Police Station Cell and stole a police cells entries notebook was on Friday sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour by a Circuit Court in Accra.

Osei pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody and stealing. Police Chief Inspector Emmanuel T. Boison said Osei was arrested and detained in Nungua cells on a stealing charge.

Prosecution said on September 28 this year, at about 1:30 am, Osei and four other suspects at the Nungua cells forced the cells gate opened and escaped.

Chief Inspector Boison said during Osei’s escape, he stole the Police cells book containing names of prisoners in cells and went into hiding. The prosecutor said on October 27, this year, the police spotted Osei at the Nungua Police barrier and arrested him.

During interrogation Osei admitted the offence and took the police to an uncompleted building at Community 18 junction, Tema where he hid the book under a cement block.

Prosecution said Osei explained that he took the book so that he could destroy any information on his arrest since he intends travelling abroad.
