Dery meets Press in Upper West

Wa, Feb. 19, GNA – Mr. Ambrose Dery, the Upper West Regional Minister has urged the media not to hesitate in their duties to expose wrongdoings in all the spheres of development in the region. He said people were free to criticize, “but those who criticize should make sure that they give other alternatives so that we can learn better from them.”

The Regional Minister said this during his maiden meeting with media practitioners in the region to find out problems and challenges of their job in the region.

He said his duty was to work for and assist everybody in the region and would therefore, not be selective in his dealings. “As media practitioners you occupy a vital position and that is why I will like to see you as developing partners who hold a greater stake in our development agenda,” he said.

The meeting was represented by media practitioners from both the state owned and private media in the region.

Mr. Emmanuel Okang, Regional director of the GBC told the meeting that the Upper West directorate could no longer telecast television programmes all day for viewers due mainly to financial constraints. As a result, they begin transmission at 0500 like other regions and close after 0800 hrs and resume transmission at 1600 hrs which is displeasing the people, particularly as they cannot watch programmes on the Presidential Initiative on distance learning.

In reaction, Mr. Dery promised to hold consultative meetings with stakeholders to ensure that the people of the region enjoyed the same services just like their counterparts elsewhere.
