Dental Unit of the University of Ghana Hospital inaugurated

Accra, Sept. 21, GNA – The Dental Unit of the University of Ghana Hospital, Legon, was on Wednesday inaugurated with a call for more medical staff to help man it.

The Unit, which currently has two doctors and two nurses, lacks dental technicians and assistance to assist doctors in its daily running.

Inaugurating the unit, Professor Cliff Tagoe, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, said more than 40 per cent of Out Patients attendances at the hospital was from the University community. But now that services and facilities had been improved, the Hospital could now serve more clients outside the University, he said. The project, which was partly funded by the Micro Project Management Programme Unit (MPMPU) of the European Union with 75 million cedis, had the Central Management of the University funding the rest, which was three times the EU support.

The Dental Unit has two surgery rooms, nurses’ rest room, waiting, recovery, washing and autoclave rooms.

Dr Eugenia Ofori-Adjei, Director of the Hospital, said the Ministry of Health provided the unit with complete dental equipment while the Dental School complemented the gesture with a dental chair. She said the hospital needed an administration block that would include restrooms and a canteen among other facilities for staff. “We hope that the project will be favourably considered when the request is presented to the EU Micro-Project office for assistance,” she said.

Mr Teddy Konu, Registrar, who chaired the function, commended EU for their continuous support to the University.
