Denkyira Traditional Council Imposes Ban on Funerals, Noise-Making Ahead of New King’s Coronation

The Denkyira Traditional Council has announced a total ban on funerals, noise-making, and public gatherings across the traditional area from Monday, September 22, 2025, to Friday, November 7, 2025.

The directive is part of preparations for the enthronement and coronation of the 26th King of Denkyira — a process deeply rooted in sacred customs and rituals.

The announcement was made at Amponsem Ahenfie in Dunkwa Abankesiɛso after an Oman Council meeting.

The Denkyira Abakomahene Nana Gyekye Annim III said the ban was necessary to create a calm and spiritually charged atmosphere for the enstoolment ceremony.

He described the period as a time of purification, unity, and reflection for the entire kingdom, cautioning that any disturbances could disrupt the sacred process.

“This is a time for all Denkyira citizens to come together in discipline and reverence. The rituals we will perform are not only for the new king but for the peace and progress of the entire kingdom,” he said.

The 46-day ban will affect all communities under the Denkyira Traditional Area. Churches, mosques, event organisers, and entertainment centres have been directed to suspend all noisy activities until the end of the period.

Nana Gyekye Annim III further warned that anyone who defies the directive will face traditional sanctions, underscoring the seriousness of the order.

He also revealed that the official proclamation of the king-elect will take place on Monday, September 29, 2025, at the Jukwa forecourt of the Amponsem Ahenfie, followed by a series of sacred rituals leading up to the final coronation.

The Denkyira Kingdom, one of Ghana’s oldest traditional states dating back to the 17th century, considers the installation of a new king a moment of cultural renewal and a step that could shape the region’s future.
