Demolition exercise should follow due process – Assemblyman

Mr. Evans Ablordeppey, assemblyman for Anloga-West in Kumasi, has underscored the need for decentralized Assemblies, to follow due process in mass demolition exercises.

Such exercises, he said, bother on the livelihood of the people, particularly petty traders, and that it was high time they were given a human face.

“The Assemblies should work in concert with all stakeholders, such as the security, opinion leaders and those to be affected for the success of such programmes”, he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi.

Mr. Ablordeppey, who is also the Oforikrom Constituency Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), decried some recent demolition exercises across the nation, which had come with their own challenges.

He noted that petty squabbles and clashes which characterized the exercises could have been avoided if due process was followed by effectively engaging stakeholders.

“For me all intended demolition exercises ought to be given prior notice, way ahead of time, to keep the people in the know, before the Task Force moves into action,” he noted.

Mr. Ablordeppey was optimistic that by so doing, the people would see the need for such programmes, and also avoid situations where government was criticized unnecessarily for no wrong-doing.
