The National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth in the Anlo-Keta Municipality of the Volta Region are poised to stage a massive protest against what they term a ‘development deficit’ in the area.
The proposed demonstration is premised on the shifting of the Member of Parliament for Anlo, Clement Kofi Humado, from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, in a recent reshuffle.
The mass protest is to take off on Wednesday July 16, 2014, from the Anloga Police Station.
A group calling itself Concerned NDC Members For Development, in a letter notifying the police of the intended demonstration, mentioned, among other things, the government’s inability to fulfil the development promises like the dredging of the Keta Lagoon, the Keta Fishing Harbour or the fishing landing site, the aquaculture project and the support for fishermen and farmers in the constituency.
According to John Bukuda, spokesperson for the group, they intended to present their petition to the Awoamefia of the Anlo State, Togbui Sri III and the Municipal Chief Executive, Slyvester Tornyeava.
“This action has been triggered by the relief of some Ministers recently by the President which included the Member of Parliament for Anlo and Minister of Food and Agriculture, Clemence Kofi Humado.
According to one of the leaders, they would continue to mount pressure on the NDC government through demonstrations which would be replicated in other parts of the Volta Region. “We have been swallowing their promises for a very long time and the only way we could voice out our displeasure is through demonstrations,” the spokesperson pointed out.
“We are tired of their vain promises and nothing will stop us from hitting the streets come next Wednesday,” he stressed.
Recently, the chiefs of the region threatened to go on demonstration with their subjects in the capital, Ho, but the President himself rushed to meet them and defused the situation.
