Demand responsible conduct from politicians – Kufuor

Accra, Aug. 21, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor has asked Ghanaians to demand responsible conduct from politicians seeking their mandate in the coming December poll to govern. The election must be contested on the basis of issues and policy choices to sustain the nation on the path of growth and prosperity but not threats of mayhem and violence.

President Kufuor gave the reminder when a delegation of chiefs from the Efutu Traditional Area in the Central Region paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu, on Wednesday evening. Neenyi Ghartey VII, the Omanhene, led the delegation, which was there for the dual purpose of saying “thank you” to him for twice honouring the invitation to participate in the Aboakyir Festival and to update him on a sister-city arrangement between Winneba and the city of Birmingham in the State of Alabama, US.

President Kufuor repeated the Government’s total commitment towards ensuring that the poll was free, fair, transparent and credible. He asked chiefs and other opinion leaders in the society to send a clear message to all that the nation wanted to continue down a road of peace.

He praised the Omanhene for bringing peace to his people and expressed optimism about the future of the traditional area. Neenyi Ghartey earlier appealed to the Government to see to it that the Electoral Commission (EC) was provided with everything that it needed to make the conduct of the elections transparent and the outcome acceptable to all.

He also conveyed the appreciation of the traditional council and the people to President Kufuor for the elevation of their district into a municipality. Regarding the sister-city arrangement, he said this would be officially sealed in February, next year.
