The celebration of the eight recently-freed Delta Force members may be short-lived, as they may soon find themselves before court again.
The eight were freed last week for lack of evidence in the case in which they allegedly attacked a court in Kumasi and freed 13 of their members who were standing trial.
Government prosecutors say they discontinued the case due to lack of evidence. But the deputy attorney general, Joseph Kpemka, has now served notice that the men could be re-arrested and tried if new evidence turns up.
“If any new evidence comes up, we would call the case and re-arrest the men,” he said on News File on Joy FM on Saturday.
The release of the Delta Force members has been met with shock and outrage by many Ghanaians.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been particularly vocal in it condemnation of the move and has accused the government of protecting the eight because of their affiliation to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The minority in parliament has described the men’s release as a travesty of justice and has asked the police to re-arrest them.
