The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the Judiciary to set benchmarks that will better impact on the justice delivery system, insisting the quality of justice delivery in Ghana’s court system has shortfalls.
Speaking at the Chief Justice’s forum in Kumasi on Monday, the Asantehene alluded to the GHc 1,800 fine imposed on members of pro-NPP vigilante group, Delta Force who stormed a court room in Kumasi to release suspects who were standing trial.
The Asantehene said:”If someone steals a goat and is fined GHS5,000, and additionally slapped with a jail term, how can people who invaded a courtroom, overpower the security, release suspects, and put the life of the judge and staff in danger be fined only GHS1,800 and discharged.”
“Has justice been served? And if even it has been served, the question maybe asked, whether quality justice was served. Quality justice for whom?,” the Asantehene quizzed Judges.
He stressed the trend is undeniably undermining the confidence of Ghanaians in the quality of justice delivery in Ghana, saying the trial of the notorious cases of political party vigilantism smacks of poor administration of justice.
