Accra, Sept. 5 GNA – Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Tuesday commended General Electric (GE) Healthcare of the United States for its support to the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
Prof Akosa made the commendation when he accompanied the wives of three Senior Executives of GE and a staff of the organization to pay a courtesy call on the First Lady, Mrs Theresa Kufuor at her office in Accra.
The delegation, which has been in the country for past three days, is to learn at first hand the work of the Mother and Child Foundation, a nongovernmental organisation (NGO), working to assist women and children in deprived areas.
He said the GHS had effective collaboration with the GE and the organization was impressed with Ghana’s effort on its health sector hence its continued support to it.
He cited the upgrading of the Asesewa Health Post into a district hospital as a result of the health equipment donated by GE, whiles Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital; Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Kintampo District Hospital in the Brong Ahafo Region had also benefited from similar donations.
Mrs Kufuor, who runs the NGO, said it provided alternative livelihood to mothers and opportunities to sustain themselves. She said it was the communities that usually came out with their programmes and the organization helped them with the implementation. She said the Foundation was assisting some women in soap making, batik tie and dye and shea butter extraction in the Central, Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions.
