Delay in payment of junior doctors’ salaries

Takoradi, Nov. 12, GNA- Dr. Francis Adu-Ababio, president of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), said the group considered delay in the payment of salaries to house officers popularly known as junior doctors as worrying and disheartening.

The GMA also considered present salaries as woefully inadequate and even though it had negotiated for improved salaries, present salaries were not based on those agreed upon.

Dr. Adu-Ababio was reading a communiqu=E9 of the GMA at a press conference to climax the five-day 49th Annual General Conference of the GMA, organized under the theme “Medical Ethics and Safety of Medical practice in Ghana: Emerging challenges,” at Takoradi at the weekend. The communiqu=E9 said the GMA was working hard to ensure that these anomalies were rectified to safeguard the interest of the doctors. It called on the government to adeautely resource all statutory bodies to work effectively to enhance medical practice in Ghana. The statement urged government to initiate a scheme to support operators of private health facilities to lessen the burden on public health institutions.

Government had been asked to equip and resource all public hospitals and clinics to conform to hospital strategy document. The GMA appealed to the government to adequately resource the Teaching Hospitals and nursing training institutions to enable them to train the requisite medical personnel for the country.
