Defilement cases rise in Volta Region

Ho, May 10, GNA – The Volta Regional Branch of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Police Service recorded a total of 152 defilement cases and 34 rape cases in 2006.

A statement from the Volta Regional Police Command said the cases were common at Anloga, Akatsi, Ho, Anyirawase, Tsito, Kpetoe and Hohoe. It expressed regret that in spite of massive educational campaign nationwide, children and women continued to be abused sexually. The statement said the some of the perpetrators were persons who knew and were close to the children.

It attributed the situation to parental irresponsibility and the refusal of some parents to demystify sexual education. The statement appealed to the broad spectrum of society to rise up against the problem with the spirit of communal ownership for the betterment of society.
