Defence Minister praises Gonjas as pacesetters for peaceful existence

The minister for defence and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bimbilla constituency in the Northern Region, Dominic Nitiwul has described the peaceful coexistence among Gonjas and other tribes as an enviable and cherished in the entire Northern Region.

Addressing an enthusiastic youth of the Gonjaland at the 41st annual Gonjaland Youth Congress at Sawla in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district as the special guest of honour, he called on other ethnic groups to emulate the Gonjas.

“The unity among you has been unique. I have always admired you as a people having lived together as neighbours for so many years” he said.

He said Gonjaland should tap into the good policies of government especially on the free SHS program to be rolled up in September. “You need to set an agenda of ensuring you increase your literacy percentage to make room for development in the various Gonjaland districts”

Former president John Dramani Mahama on his part called for unity in Gonjaland describing unity as a prerequisite for development. “When I was president, I presided over a country that coexisted in diverse ways”. He cautioned Gonjalanders to desist from joining groups that will mare the peace in Gonjaland but to take advantage of opportunities government will create to inure to their benefit as government prepares to start a process in the creation of more regions out of the existing ones.

The inner city and Zongo development minister and lawmaker for Madina, Boniface Abubakari Sadiqque called on the youth to be disciplined and use social media to attract development and not to insult their elders. He observed that there is no decorum and sanity in various comments on various social media platforms in recent times and called on the youth to be circumspect in their choice of words.

The chairman of the Gonjaland youth association Mr. Alhassan Dramani thanked the president for sending a High powered government delegation to grace the occasion and called on him to consider splitting the east Gonja district into Salaga South district and Salaga North district as the district is vast and makes accessibility difficult.
