Defeated women candidates urged to fight on

Apam (C/R), Oct. 18, GNA – Defeated women candidates in the last district level elections have been advised not to allow the defeat to end their political ambitions.

Rather, they should put the defeat behind them and start planning for the 2010 elections.

Miss Comfort Morgan, assembly member-elect for the Nsawam-Bombua Electoral Area at Apam in the Gomoa District who gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Apam on Wednesday noted that many women lost the elections because of the lack of proper planning. Miss Morgan, who won the election for the second consecutive time exhorted women especially those who had political ambitions to take keen interest in social activities in their communities.

She said during her first term in office at the assembly, she organized 30 groups in and outside her electoral area and assisted them to secure micro-credits from the Social Investment Fund (SIF), the Poverty Alleviation Fund (PAT) and from the Gomoa Akyempim and Gomoa Ajumako Rural Banks at Dawurampong and Afranse respectively. Miss Morgan, who is also the Gomoa District Information Officer, said she was able to monitor the groups to ensure that the loans were repaid.

The assembly member-elect thanked the electorate for the confidence they had in her, especially the Zongo and Adanka communities. She said she was not interested in finding out persons who did not vote for her since she was ready to work with anybody and would need a massive support to initiate and implement projects.

Miss Morgan said she would strengthen the Unit Committees to assist her in her development agenda.

She appealed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to extend power to a KVIP which had been constructed for the area under the European Union Micro Project.

The project, which was completed since last, year had become a =93white elephant=94 since the people would not use it because of the lack of electricity, she added
