DCE wants fight against illegal logging stepped up

Mr Kwaku Kaakyire Oppong-Kyekyeku, the Afigya-Kwabre District Chief Executive (DCE), has expressed concern about the growing degradation of the area’s environment through illegal logging and sand winning.

He described the situation as disturbing and urged assembly members and the unit committees to do more to rein in the offenders in their various communities.

. Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kodie, said the impunity needs to be tackled head-on without wasting time and as such the District Security Committee (DISEC) had put in place some measures to check the illegal activities.

“This includes the formation of a Task Force to track down those engaged in the unlawful timber felling and sand winning and bring them to justice.”

Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku vowed to do everything to maintain the eco-system, saying that, some level of sanity would be restored to protect the natural vegetation for both the present generation and posterity.

He also spoke of efforts the government was making to put the bad roads in the area into good shape, adding that, work is steadily progressing on the 8.9 kilometre Pankrono-Atimatim-Maase-Meduma roads as well as the Fawode-Swedru-Aboabogya roads.

He said those of Maase-Nkukua-Buoho and Tetrem Junction-Abidjan would soon be awarded.
