DCE campaigns for people with disability

Mr. Enoch Kojo Appiah, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Shama, has appealed to Ghanaians to vote for Persons with Disability (PWDs) who have put themselves up to be elected as assembly members in the up-coming district level elections (DLE).

He said PWDs were capable of serving the nation at all levels of governance and cited Dr. Henry Siedu Dannaa, Minister of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, as a classic example.

Mr. Appiah made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting in Shama to whip up the enthusiasm of the electorate to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming district level elections on March 3.

He appealed to women not to shy away from putting themselves up for elections since they could champion the cause of women better.

The event, which was organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) with funding from the European Union, brought together key stakeholders in the district including, assembly members, women groups, PWDs, youth associations and the media.

Mr. Appiah appealed to all contestants in the up-coming DLE to desist from using intemperate language in their campaigns and tolerate opposing views to promote grassroots democracy.

The District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Obed Dzikunu, advised all contestants and their followers to avoid any act of violence and be civil in their comments.

He warned that anyone caught in the act of violence or lawlessness would face the full rigours of the law.

Mr. Alphonsus Arthur, Western Regional Director for NCCE, said the election was an opportunity for the electorate to make a choice as to who should represent them at the local government level and insulting one another would not promote democracy and development.
