DCE calls for establishment of ”Volu” in all schools

Agona (Ash), Aug 5, GNA – Mr Ben Abankwah, Afigya/Sekyere District Chief Executive, has suggested that Voluntary Work Camps Association be formed in all educational institutions. This, he said, w0uld inspire the youth to undertake communal labour in their schools and communities.

Mr Abankwa made the call at Jamasi when he addressed foreign volunteers and their Ghanaian counterparts who had spent six weeks to build a 12-unit classroom block for the Agona Seventh-Day Secondary School.

The Parent/Teacher Association (PTA) and past students of the school are financing the project.

He commended the volunteers for deciding to spend their time at Agona to build the classroom block and said it would serve as a monumental challenge to the youth of today.

The DCE donated 100 bags of cement as the Afigya/Sekyere District Assembly’s contribution to the project.

Mr. Ernest Kofi Gyimah, Headmaster of the school, lauded the foreign volunteers for coming to the aid of the school at the expenses of their comfort.

Mr Samuel Owusu Yeboah, Head of the Voluntary Work Camp Association of Ghana, said one of the objectives of the association was to foster in the youth the spirit of voluntarism and service to mankind. He deplored the lack of communal spirit among the people of Agona and urged them to rekindle their communal spirit.

Nana Oppong Mensah, Chief of Bedomase, who chaired the function, expressed appreciation to the volunteers for the good work they had done and appealed to other youth associations to follow the example of ”Volu.”
