DCE calls assembly members to project the image of the assembly

Akropong, June 25, GNA – Mr George Opare-Addo, Akuapem North District Chief Executive, on Thursday urged assembly members to conduct their affairs in a manner that projects the image of their positions and the assembly as well.

He said this when addressing a special assembly meeting where they failed to elect a presiding member after two rounds of voting and at each count 10 ballot papers were spoiled. Mr Opare-Addo said the assembly members were leaders in civic education therefore it was difficult to comprehend that 10 spoiled ballots were recorded out of 62 votes.

He therefore urged them to show understanding and example to the people they represent by honouring obligations such as paying of property rates and other taxes and to exhibit high sense of behaviour for the people to emulate. He told the assembly that as DCE it was responsibility to implement programmes that are in tune with the government’s vision. “I will not abandon projects started by the previous administration since they were selected according to the people’s needs and aspirations.”

Mr Opare-Addo said out of the GHC 278, 826 revenue targeted for the year 2009, only GHC 87, 695.84 had been realized as at May representing 31 percent and with that trend it was obvious that the target could not be achieved.

Later, Mr Opare-Addo paid a courtesy call on the Okuapemhene, Nana Addo Danquah, during an ‘adae’ceremony and appealed for support and advice of the traditional council in steering the affairs of the district to the satisfaction of all.

He said he was aware of the many chieftaincy disputes in the area and assured the chiefs that he would be neutral yet resolute in finding measures to bring lasting solutions and peace to the area. The Krontihene of Akuapem, Nana Offei Gyan Kwasi, who spoke on behalf of the Okuapemhene, urged him to be fair and objective and not to take sides on issues in the interest of politics since that had the tendency to mar his administration and that of the government. 25 June 09
