Dan Lartey returned unopposed

It was unopposed galore at the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) National Delegates’ Congress in Accra on Saturday, as Mr Dan Lartey, Leader of the Party, was elected its Flagbearer for Elections 2004.

Also returned unopposed were the National Chairman, First Vice Chairman, Second Vice Chairman, General Secretary, National Women’s Organiser and the National Organiser.

Mr E. B. Mensah is the National Chairman; Mr John Thompson, the First Vice Chairman and Mr Gilbert Barnor, the Second Vice Chairman. The rest are Mr John Amekah, General Secretary; Mr Samuel Obeng, National Organiser and Miss Victoria Phillips Ghann National Women’s Organiser.

The Congress, which was held at the Party’s Headquarters at the Citadel House in Accra and supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC), was peaceful.

The unusually large number of Policemen deployed to ensure peace had little work to do.

Two days prior to the Congress, five Executive Members of the Party announced their resignation from the party. In addition some high-ranking members had also filed a writ at an Accra High Court asking the Court to restrain Mr Lartey and the Party from holding the Congress. It was apparently for these reasons that the Police presence was that heavy to forestall any unpleasant eventuality.

The delegates comported themselves, acted in a matured manner and went through the elections peacefully.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Lartey thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in him.

He urged the rank and file of the Party to close their ranks and remain united to ensure victory come December.
