Dadekotopon MP hailed for promoting the resumption of La Homowo

The resumption of Homowo celebration among the people of La in Accra this year, has received a major boost with free distribution of maize and palm fruits to all 72 clans of the area.

Family members of the various clan houses, who for 15 years could not celebrate the Homowo festival due to misunderstandings and disunity, queued amidst jubilations, singing and dancing to receive their share of the booty which was made possible by the Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Nii Amasah Namoale.

Having succeeded in smoking the peace pipe and agreed to return to the full observation and respect of traditional norms and practices, the MP said it was utmost important that this year’s Homowo was celebrated in a unique fashion.

Homowo, which is a festival celebrated among the Gas in Greater Accra Region to remind the people of one time famine, means hooting at hunger. “Kpokpoi”, the main food for the festival, is made from maize and eaten with a palm nut soup.

Each clan house received a bag of the maize and a bunch of the palm fruit, thanking the MP for the gesture and the effort he was making to revive the celebration this year.

“All the people in the clan houses will meet on the September 27, which is the actual Homowo day to eat together from one bowl the Kpokpoi and count ourselves to see the number of those who died and those that are living,” Nii Namoale said to explain the celebration.

He said once the seven Quarters of La, out which came the 72 clan houses, were united this time around, nothing stops the celebration, adding adequate preparation had been made to make the occasion great and unique.

The MP, who is also the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in Charge of Fisheries, added that as part of his efforts for the Homowo celebration, locally made fabrics were being promoted among the people.

“I have sent letters to all clan houses to impress upon their people to use locally made fabrics for the Homowo celebration,” he said.
