Koforidua, Oct. 27, GNA – The Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Dr Oti Boateng, on Tuesday suggested mandatory eye test for drivers as a way of reducing road accidents. He said people should be banned from using mobile phones while driving.
Daasebre Dr Oti Boateng was speaking at the launch of the Eastern Regional celebration of the 10 anniversary of the establishment of the Driver, Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in Koforidua on Tuesday.
He called for the provision of more road signs along the major roads. The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Ms Beatrice B. Boateng, appealed to teachers to teach school children road signs. She said people rearing animals should to take measures to ensure that their animals do not stray onto the roads.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, called on the NRSC to educate passengers to know their rights and to insist on them when in a vehicle and also to report recalcitrant drivers to the police. He attributed the high incidence of road accidents to the failure of statutory bodies to perform their work effectively. Mr Ofosu-Ampofo therefore called on statutory bodies to live up to expectation to help reduce road accidents.
The Eastern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Mr Stephen Anokye, advised the travelling public to insist on their rights in the fight to reduce road accidents. 27 Oct. 09
