D/A election aspirants increase in Dormaa

Out of a total of 104 aspiring assembly members, 95 have submitted their forms to compete in the 30 electoral areas in Dormaa Central Municipality of the Brong–Ahafo Region.

The number (95) far exceeds the previous nominations received by the Electoral Commission (EC), which stood at 84, when nominations were first opened in December last year before it was later cancelled.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Christian Boafo-Offeh, the Dormaa Municipal and Dormaa West Electoral Officer, said out of the total initial number, eight of them failed to submit their forms, while one also failed to beat the dead line for the submission of the forms.

He said three women and one disabled person were among the aspirants, who had filed to contest in the up-coming elections.

The Electoral Officer attributed the rise in the number of candidates contesting in the elections to the sustained publicity given to the process.

Mr Boafo-Offeh said 28 people have picked forms to vie in the elections in the Dormaa West District and same number had submitted to contest in the elections for the 10 electoral areas in that district.

He, however, expressed concern about the low patronage of the unit committee by candidates, and warned that the trend ought to change as it could affect local development.
