Customs unit of GRA most corrupt security agency – Survey

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been ranked the most corrupt security agency in Ghana.

A regional advocacy organisation, Borderless Alliance said the Division is engaged in massive extortion of money from transport companies operating along Ghana’s borders.

The findings are contained in a report which will be released Wednesday.

Executive Secretary of the group, Justine Bayili told STARR NEWS that: “The Customs service are taking more money than the Police while it shouldn’t be so.”

“If we have eight checkpoints for Customs, why will Customs continue checking the same truck, the same driver with the same documentation eight times in the country? There’s no need,” he said.

According to him, though Customs have fewer checkpoints than the Police, they indulge in more corrupt acts than the other security agencies.

The Chief Revenue Officer at the Tema Port, Nicholas Okpora has told STARR NEWS he felt scandalised by the findings, especially since the Customs unit has been sensitising its officers against extorting money at the checkpoints.
