Curfew renewed for Bimbila township

The Minister of the Interior on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council and by the Executive Instrument on Friday renewed the Curfew imposed on Bimbilla Township with effect from Friday October 3, 2014.

In a statement signed by Mr Mark Owen Woyongo, Minister of the Interior and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the curfew period is now from 1800 hours to 06:00 hours.

The statement called on Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace to the area.

Meanwhile, there is a total ban on all persons in the Bimbilla Township and surrounding areas from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon, and any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.

Information available to the GNA indicates that the Bimbilla Township has been on a 12-hours curfew for about five months now over a deadly shooting incident, which led to the death of the overload of the area, Naa Dasana Abdulai Andani II.

The shooting was triggered by a disagreement between two chieftaincy factions over where to bury the late chief of the town, Naa Salifu Dawuni.

Government however initiated an investigation into the matter and subsequently arrested over 20 persons.
