Curfew in Hohoe is relaxed

The curfew imposed on Hohoe and its environs has been further relaxed from 12 midnight to 0500 hours, a statement signed by Mr. William K. Aboah, the Minister of the Interior has said.

The curfew was first imposed from 1800 hours to 0600 hours and reduced from 2000 hours to 0500 hours.

The statement said the government appeals to the chiefs, elders and opinion leaders, the youth and people of the area to maintain all channels towards brokering lasting peace in the area.

It reaffirmed the ban on all persons in the affected area from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons as punitive measures including arrest and prosecution awaits those who would flout this directive.

Violence erupted between the Zongo youth and the indigenes of Hohoe when youth from the Zongo community looted and burnt the palace of the Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu VI following the exhumation and dumping of the of the body of the local chief Imam at the outskirts of the town after he had been buried the previous day.

Retaliatory response from the indigenes resulted in loss of lives and burning of houses and stores.**
