C’ttee to handle public petitions to Parliament set up

Accra, March 1, GNA – A Sub-Committee of the Standing Orders Committee of Parliament has been set up to handle petitions from the public to Parliament.

This is also aimed at safeguarding the rights of the citizenry in seeking redress and to further enhance democracy in the country. A statement issued in Accra from the Public Affairs Section of Parliament, said Mr Peter Ala Adjetey, Speaker of Parliament, has appointed a four-member panel to the committee with Mr Mohammed Mumuni, Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, as its Chairman.

The statement said Mr Adjetey believed that the move would sink the country’s foot deep into parliamentary democracy.

The statement noted that even though the Standing Orders dealt with petitions to Parliament, it did not spell out how such petitions should be handled or who should respond to them.

The statement said the setting up would afford the mass of the people access to Parliament without any difficulty.
