Cruel mother jailed 36 months by Circuit Court

Kumasi, Aug. 31, GNA – A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 33 year-old mother of five, who cruelly beat her five-year daughter with electric wire for stealing her GH¢2.00 to 36 months imprisonment.

Vivian Badu, a single-mother, pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm.

Police Chief Inspector Collins Nana Kwesi Fosu told the Court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that the convict lives with the victim, Doris Boamah, at Krofrom in Kumasi.

On August 27, at about 0900 hours, Badu locked-up the little girl in her room and subjected her to severe thrashing.

A co-tenant informed the police after fruitless attempts at persuading the convict to open the door and free the victim failed.

The prosecution said the police forced the door opened and saw little Boamah kneeling with the hands raised and marks all over her body.

Badu was arrested and the victim sent to the Tafo Government Hospital, where he was kept on admission overnight.

He said the woman admitted the offence in her caution statement.

Meanwhile, the court has ordered that the victim should be sent to the Department of Social Welfare.
