The Director of Administration at the CID headquarters, ACP Alex Amponsah-Asiamah has revealed that the overall statistics on the major crimes committed in the country show a decrease in crime rate as compared to the previous year.
He noted that the total number of crimes reported from January to December 2011 were 231, 908 as against 228,653 for the same period in 2012.
Armed robbery alone, according to him, dropped by 109 cases last year.
The Director of Administration averred that this feat was chalked by prudent crime prevention measures that were put in place, coupled with the proactive policing strategies being adopted by the police administration as well as the capacity building programmes for detectives across the country.
ACP Amponsah-Asiamah revealed this at their annual West African Security Services Association (WASSA) last Friday at the CID headquarters.
To improve upon this performance however, he noted that there was the need to train and retrain detectives to meet the current scientific trend of crime combat.
“In this regard, the CID administration on March 4 started a two week training course in cyber crime investigations and digital forensics for its personnel.
“This capacity building course and other courses will be organized for detectives across the country.”
He asserted that the fight against crime in our society was a shared responsibility.
The Director General of CID said without the support of civil society, the police would not have been able to get to where they were now and thus applauded them for their support.
He urged personnel of the service to be professional in the discharge of their duties and to exercise good discretion at all times.
The ceremony attracted senior police officers including commissioner of police Rose Bio Atinga, the Director General, Administration; COP Prosper K. Agblor, Director General, CID; COP James Oppong Boanuh, Director General, PIPS; DCOP Ken Yeboah, Director General, Legal, and DCOP Mina Ayim, Director General Welfare.
Awards were also given to some past police officers who contributed to the success of the CID.
