CPP Youth Organizer accuses Government of insensitivity

Kumasi, June 8, GNA – The National Youth Organizer of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Mr Kwabena Bomfeh, has accused the Mills Administration of insensitivity and said the recent tariff increases would worsen the economic situation of the people.

The new water and electricity charges, he said, should leave no one in doubt that the government was “not a caring one.” Mr Bomfeh, who is in Kumasi to rally the people to hit the streets to protest the upward tariff adjustments, said it was ironic for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), after its drumbeat “I care for you campaign mantra” to raise water and electricity bills to such outrageously high levels.

The demonstration fixed for Wednesday, June 9, in Kumasi, has been called by the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), a political pressure group.

Mr Bomfeh, a leading member of the group, told the Ghana News Agency that they would continue to struggle to get the government to freeze the implementation of the new tariffs. He said it was completely unacceptable for the government which campaigned on lessening the economic burden of the people by drastically reducing utility bills to make a sharp “u-turn” and do exactly the opposite. He said the government, as a matter of urgency, should suspend the increases until the time consumers were assured of quality services by the utility companies.
