CPP/PNC to hold concurrent National Delegates Congress

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) are exploring possibilities to hold a concurrent National Delegates Congress to elect national officers.

The CPP, the initiator of the move, has therefore sent a proposal to the PNC for consideration of a possible month and date for the concurrent congress, a source told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Accra on Tuesday.

The CPP has fixed September 18 and 19 for its National Delegates Congress to elect national officers to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years, whilst the PNC also has fixed October 9-11 for its congress.

Information gathered within the parties by the GNA indicated that the concurrent congress would explore the possibilities of electing national leaders, and jointly electing interim Co-executives.

The concurrent congress is part of a grand scheme being adopted towards the eventual merger of the two major Nkrumahist parties.

The two Nkrumahist parties have been negotiating behind the scenes over the past years to form a united Nkrumahist front.

A source told the GNA that to speed up the process of the merger, the chairmen and general secretaries of the two parties have been co-opted to be part of the Unity Committee.

The two parties have sent a proposal to the Electoral Commission on their pending unity talks and the way forward, in case of an agreement so that the symbols of the two parties could not be used for at least 10 years after the unity talks, to ensure total compliance of the decisions of the unity talks.
