CPP loyalists must defend Nkrumah’s legacy – Akwetey

Accra, Jan. 9, GNA – Lawyer Bright O. Akwetey, Convention People’s Party (CPP) Flag bearer Aspirant on Monday called on party loyalists to stand out and defend the principles, tenets and legacy bequeathed to the party and Ghana by Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“The current daunting challenges facing the party are the works of reactionary forces that intend to divert the party’s attention and resources from focusing on strategies for Election 2012.

“All Nkrumahists must therefore remain resolute, stand out and protect the integrity of the party and its founder through a renewal of commitment to the party,” Lawyer Akwetey stated after picking nomination forms to contest for the flag-bearership slot of the party in Accra.

Mr Akwetey described the occasion as the beginning of a pragmatic process towards a dramatic electoral shift in Ghanaian politics; and called on all Nkrumahists to watch out and guard against propagandist tactics aimed at destabilising the party.

He noted that reactionary forces within and outside were causing internal antagonism, creating imaginary enemies among comrades and trumpeting the seeming differences to cause confusion among the rank and file for their selfish gains.

“I, Blight O. Akwetey as flag-bearer aspirant appeal to CPP members, sympathisers and activists throughout the country not to be perturbed, but remain focused, unmovable and concentrate on the ultimate goal of revamping CPP as a political force in the country.

“What is important is for us all, from the national executives through the regions, constituencies and the polling station levels to focus on the common agenda of the party of liberating Ghana from economic enslavement once again.”

He said, “Internal bickering has not helped the party in the past and would not help us in the future…we must bury our differences, join hands and fight for the interest of mother Ghana.

“The masses would not forgive the CPP if we fail to provide a pragmatic leadership to once again liberate Ghana and to propel the nation forward. I call on all delegates to vote for me as the Party’s flag-bearer for Elections 2012”.

Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, CPP General Secretary commended the flag-bearer aspirant for the bold commitment to lead the party in Election 2012, but appealed to all aspirants to conduct their campaign with the greatest sense of decorum. Large numbers of party faithfuls spent early hours of the day at the party headquarters jubilating and dancing to brass band music to demonstrate their unflagging
