CPP Commemorates International Women’s day

Accra, March 8, GNA – The Convention People’s Party (CPP) on Wednesday described the International Women’s day as a commemoration day to celebrate womanhood and the struggle and sacrifice made by women groups towards ensuring gender equity.

A statement signed by the CPP General Secretary, Dr Nii Noi Dowuona said Ghana had since 1957 been deservedly celebrating the occasion in recognition of the immense contribution of women of Ghana to the socio-economic transformation of the country.

“As we celebrate this day, we call on all Ghanaians to commit themselves to the noble ideals of equality of all manner of people and the emancipation of women and the under-privileged people throughout the world,” the statement said.

“For the CPP, the struggle for emancipation, self-dignity and equity of our people has remained the pivot of the Party’s philosophy.” The statement said the CPP had called on the Government to work assiduously to resolve outstanding issues on the “Domestic Violence Bill” and other forms of proposed legislation to pave the way for their passage as a commitment towards advancing the cause of women.

He said the CPP would continue to explore avenues to support Ghanaian women and Gender Advocacy organisation in their just cause to seek equal opportunity for women including children. “As we celebrate International Women’s day, let us renew our resolve to protect, consolidate and expand women’s rights, resolve to defend the rule of law, protect the democratic gains made and indeed strive to enhance democracy,” the statement said.

He said the best protection for the rights of women was an open and democratic society free from all manner of discrimination, especially against the under-privileged. 8 March 06.
