CPP Backs PNC For Asawase Seat

Determined to present a formidable Nkrumaists force to contest the 2008 election, the leadership of the Convention People’s party (CPP) have agreed to put their party’s weight behind its sister party, the People’s National Convention (PNC) to contest the impending bye election at the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Heritage intelligence can reveal.

The Heritage gathered that the decision of the CPP to back the PNC and present a single Nkrumaists front was agreed after a series of meetings between the two parties over the past few weeks. The CPP leadership also put into consideration the PNC’s comparative advantage so far as the Asawase Constituency is concerned because of its vintage performance in the last three elections.

Also Alhaji Issaka Ibrahim, who contested two elections for the PNC in 1996 and 2000, is considered the most popular face among the rest of the candidates contesting for the other parties. When contacted, the spokesman for the PNC, Dr Somtim Tobiga confirmed the Heritage story and said it is a good will gesture to their brother in the PNC in order to concretise their march towards final unity of the Nkrumaists forces.

“It would prove to all that we are taking the unity talks seriously,” he told newsmen last Friday after a meeting with the top hierarchy of the CPP at the Party Headquarters. Among the top brass of the CPP present at the meeting were the Chairman of the party, Dr Edmund Delle; Mr Johnny Hansen, Third Vice Chairman; Mrs Araba Bentsi-Enchill First vice chairman, and Prof. Nii Noi Dowuona, the General Secretary of the party.
