COVID-19: University of Ghana lifts ban on social gatherings

The University of Ghana (UG), Legon, has officially lifted the suspension on social gatherings that was enforced following a recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases on campus.

This was contained in a notice released by the Office of Student Affairs following consultations with University Health Services and University Management on Monday, July 14.

“The restriction on social gatherings on the University of Ghana campus due to the resurgence of COVID-19 has been lifted with immediate effect,” the notice declared.

The easing of this restriction now allows student-led organisations and associations on campus to resume in-person events and weekly celebrations.

Groups including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), religious groups, and various departmental and school associations can now organise their regular activities.

“GRASAG, SRC, JCR, religious groups, departmental and school associations are now permitted to organise their week celebrations,” the university affirmed in the statement.

However, UG authorities emphasised the continued importance of health precautions. They reminded the university community that all activities must still comply with established COVID-19 safety protocols.

“Note that all COVID-19 protocols should be adhered to. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated,” the statement added.
