Covenant Stars have been crowned champions of the fifth edition of the Tariq Lamptey Foundation U-16 Football Tournament, held at the Prisons Astroturf in Roman Ridge. The spirited side triumphed over Take Hearts in a thrilling final, showcasing the best of Ghana’s budding football talent.
Their victory earned them GHS 6,000 in prize money, along with a trophy, football boots, balls, and refreshments. Runners-up Take Hearts were also rewarded for their efforts with GHS 4,000 and other incentives. Sporting Club, who finished third, and Young Wise, who placed fourth, each received GHS 2,000 for participation.
The tournament, spearheaded by Ghanaian international and Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey, has grown in stature since its inception, becoming a key platform for nurturing young talent through sport and education.
Speaking after the final, Paul Dofoe Danlawyer, head coach of Sporting Club, applauded Lamptey’s efforts.
“We are grateful to Tariq for unearthing talents. This platform helps young players embrace football globally and serves as a springboard for bigger opportunities.”
Covenant Stars head coach Daniel Ansah echoed that sentiment.
“He’s doing well. Few big stars think about underprivileged players, so I commend him,” Ansah said, urging other professionals to support grassroots football.
The event has not only provided competitive experience but also offered hope and recognition to many young players. One of the foundation’s members, Susan Akomeah, who is also Lamptey’s grandmother, highlighted the emotional significance of the project.
“This tournament motivates young players. It makes Tariq happy to see them give their best. I urge others to help push these talents forward.”
With four U-16 teams participating Covenant Stars, Take Hearts, Sporting Club, and Young Wise, the tournament served as more than just a football contest. It was a celebration of opportunity, resilience, and community spirit.
