Accra, June 16, GNA – Professor Clifford N. B. Tagoe, Acting Vice- Chancellor of the University of Ghana, on Friday said the ruling by an Accra Fast Track High Court quashing the sanctions imposed on two professors of the University did not automatically make the University’s decision null and void.
Speaking in an interview with the GNA, Professor Tagoe, who is also the in-coming Vice Chancellor, said the University had its options, which were being thoroughly discussed to enable it to take the best action.
The Court reversed a decision to remove Professor Edward Ofori-Sarpong from the position of Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana and also dismiss Professor Kwasi Agyeman, Head of the Philosophy Department.
Their dismissals followed adverse findings made against them in the Report of a Disciplinary Committee headed by Professor Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu of the Faculty of Law with respect to examination malpractices that rocked the University in 2004.
Mr Justice P. Baffoe-Bonnie, Fast Track High Court Judge, quashed the sanctions imposed on the two Professors, describing them as unlawful and unauthorised.
Professor Tagoe said the University respected the ruling by the Court adding: “The decision was taken by just one person and this does not prevent us to make an appeal.”
The Acting Vice-Chancellor said the University had prepared a statement on the Court ruling, which was being discussed and it would soon be issued to make the stance of the University clear.
Professor Tagoe said the University Council decided that Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere should return to his post as Vice Chancellor to enable him to properly hand over at the end of his tenure. His tenure ends on September 13, 2006. Professor Tagoe said the decision was in the right direction.
