Court teenager bonds for suicide attempt

Kumawu (Ash), May 31, GNA – An 18-year-old brick-moulder who attempted to commit suicide while in a police cells, has been bonded over for two years by the Kumawu circuit court.

Yaw Appiah, who pleaded not guilty, will in addition pay 10 million cedis or serve a 12 months jail term in default. He has also been ordered to report at the police station once every month. Police Inspector Gabriel Dzitornu told the court, presided over by Mr Frank Owusu-Afriyie that on May 14, this year, Appiah was arrested at Seniagya near Kumawu and placed in police cells for stealing a live goat valued at 300,000 cedis.

He said at 0600 hours the following day, the police officer on duty found to his horror that Appiah laid unconscious in a pool of blood on the floor of the cells with blood oozing from a cut on his forehead. Upon a careful examination of the room, the police officer detected that a big nail bent to support the cell door in the inner side of the room was raised and accused purportedly hit his forehead on it in an attempt to kill himself.

Inspector Dzitornu said Appiah who was treated and discharged at the hospital admitted in a caution statement that he intended to take his life because he felt too lonely at the cells since his relatives ignored him.
