Court sentences unemployed for stealing jewelry

David Odame, an unemployed who stole cash and jewelry valued at Ghc170 was on Tuesday sentenced to two years imprisonment by a circuit court at Akim Swedru in the Birim South District.

Odame, 19, pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing.

The trial judge, Mr. Yaw Atta Sampong, sentenced him to one year imprisonment for unlawful entry and two years imprisonment for stealing, to run concurrently.

Briefing the court, Police Inspector Richard Sabbath said the complainant, Mr. Frank Agyekum is an educationist and lives at Akim Swedru with the convict.

He said on March 19, Mr. Agyekum, who intended to travel the following day, packed some items including copper necklace and bracelet in a travelling bag.

According to Inspector Sabbath, on March 20, at about 0300 hours Odame broke the complainant’s window, entered the room and stole the travelling bag.

He said in the morning when Mr. Agyekum was preparing to travel, he noticed the bag was missing from the room.

Inspector Sabbath said Mr. Agyekum saw the travelling bag outside his house with the items scattered, while the necklace valued at Ghc50 and the bracelet valued Ghc120 were stolen.

He lodged a complaint with the police who was at that time investigating a theft case against Odame and subsequently arrested him.
