Court sentenced two for assault on police

Aflao, Sept 19, GNA – Two persons, including a housewife among a group who assaulted policemen and seized their duty rifle at Amutinu, a fishing town in the Ketu District, have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment and fines by the Circuit court at Aflao.

Dotse Amenyedor, 35, a fisherman, was sentenced on his own plea to two years in prison for stealing a police duty rifle and another one million cedis fine or three months in prison for obstructing a public officer.

Mawutor Sewordor, 45, a housewife, was also sentenced on his own plea to a one million cedis’ fine or three months in prison for obstructing a public officer, and another 1.5 million cedis fine or six months in prison for assault.

Mawutor was, in addition, bonded for six months in the sum of one million cedis with a surety or one month in prison.

Police Inspector Winfred Sewor of Agavedzi told the court that on September 16 Police Sergeant Jonas Agbevam from Agavezi station went to Amutinu to invite one Richard Senanu, a son of Mawutor, to assist the police in an assault case involving him.

He said Mawutor and her husband Clemence Senanu and Jesus Senanu their son attacked the police officer and wrestled Richard from him. Police re-enforcement arrived in the town and arrested Mawutor but her husband and the two sons went into hiding.

Amenyedor and two others, Trodinah Dzakah and Kwashie Senanu, Mawutor’s brother-in-law, who are now at large, also attacked Sergeant Agbevam and snatched his duty rifle from him at the beach where he went looking for the Senanu brothers and their father.

Inspector Sewor said the other policemen heard of Agbevam’s distress call, went to his aid and after a hot chase apprehended Amenyedor and retrieved the rifle but the others escaped.
