Court sends unemployed to psychiatric hospital for examination

Kade, May 12, GNA – The Kade District Magistrate’s Court on Thursday ordered that an unemployed, Mawuli Nyamedi, who threatened and attempted to kill a woman with a pestle, be sent to the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital for examination. Police Inspector D. T. Nartey told the court that the complainant, was a farmer resident at Suhum who had his wife staying in the same vicinity as the accused at Boadua. He said on May 01 the accused called one of his sister’s children who was in the care of the wife of the complainant to follow him home. The woman suggested to the accused to go with all the three children or leave all of them behind. The prosecutor said the accused requested for a knife from the woman but she refused to give him one.

For her refusal, the accused held her neck and said 93I came purposely to teach you a lesson” and again threatened to 93kill her by all means”. The prosecutor said the accused collected a pestle and in his attempt to strike the woman, a witness in the case managed to disarm him. He said the accused directed his rage at anyone who tried to intervene and in the process he threw a man to the ground and also struck a witness with a piece of wood.

The complainant reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested and after investigation charged with the offence. When the prosecutor asked the court not to take the plea of the accused and the magistrate wanted to know why, the prosecutor said the police learnt he had a mental problem. The prosecutor requested that the accused be sent to a psychiatric hospital for examination. The case was then adjourned to June 14 and the accused sent to Ankaful for evaluation. 12 May 11
