Court renews warrants of 23 remand prisoners

Tema, June 18, GNA – Two circuit courts at Tema on Thursday renewed the remand warrants of 23 prisoners who were brought from Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

This followed a call by the prison authorities to the police to come for all remand prisoners whose warrants had expired for several months. Mr Michael Anane, Registrar at the Circuit Court ‘A’ told GNA that three of such prisoners, all facing armed robbery charges had had their warrants reviewed to enable the prisons authorities to re-admit them. Similarly, Mr Emmanuel Anegbe, Registrar at the Circuit Court ‘B’ said 18 of the armed robbers whose warrants had expired had the warrants renewed.

The Registrars said a good number of the remand prisoners went to Nsawam sometime last year, adding that warrants covering some of them had expired since last year.

Armed security men in a police truck brought the prisoners to the courts.
