Court remands trader caught with heroin

A Kumasi Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Mary Nsenkyire, has ordered a man caught with 34.468 grammes of heroin, to be held in prison custody.

Samuel Antwi, a trader, pleaded not guilty to the offence and would make his next appearance on August 11.

Police Chief Superintendent Emmanuel A. Akunnor told the court that the accused was arrested on April 03, last year, at about 1500 hours.

Officers of the Drug Enforcement Unit were doing routine checks on the Kumasi-Sunyani highway, when they found the brownish substance concealed in a black polythene bag on Antwi, who was travelling with other passengers in a Mercedes Sprinter bus.

He said the accused during police interrogation claimed that he was sent by one Afriyie to deliver the stuff to Baba Musa at Alabar in Kumasi.

He could, however, not lead the officers to the persons mentioned.

Chief Supt Akunnor said laboratory test of samples of the substance confirmed that it was indeed heroin.
