Court remands retired teacher for fraud

Kyebi (E/R), Feb. 21, GNA- The Kyebi Magistrate’s Court on Friday remanded a retired teacher, Joseph Ahimah into prison custody until February 26 for defrauding by false pretence. His plea was not taken.

Ahimah, who was representing a Local Council of Churches from the Atiwa Area at a Stakeholders Meeting on the proposed constitution for the establishment of the East Akim District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme on Friday was arrested by the police after he was identified by one of the women he defrauded at the meeting and taken to the court. The case was that, Ahimah accompanied one Justice who claimed to be working for a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to collect 40,000 cedis each from women at Akyem Banso, Paming, Bampso and Bomang on the pretext of registering them for loans.

Those women who could not provide their passport size photographs, had to pay additional 8,000 cedis for their pictures to be taken with the promise that after the loans, a child each of the women involved in the programme would be offered a scholarship from basic to the tertiary level.

Since November last year, the women have not received either the loans or the scholarship offer.

The prosecution said according to Ahimah, he accompanied Justice round to collect the money from the women because Justice promised to give him an appointment to be the Headteacher of a school which Justice promised to establish in the area.

Ahimah said since November, he has not seen Justice again.
