A 35-year old unemployed arrested by the police for car theft has been remanded into prison custody by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Alhassan Limann, is accused of stealing a Toyota Caravan valued at about GH¢5,000.00, a charge he denied.
He was ordered to re-appear before court on Thursday, December 20.
Police Chief Inspector Archibald Kwesi Fandoh told the court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amo-Yartey that the complainant, Richard Anarfi, is a taxi driver.
The prosecution said the accused is jobless and has no fixed place of residence.
Chief Insp. Fandoh said Anarfi parked his car with registration number AS 89 Q on December 8, at the Old Tafo Taxi Station, at about 2000 hours as he went to buy food.
According to the prosecution, no sooner, had Anarfi left than Limann entered the parked car and with a duplicate ignition key, started the engine and sped off.
Chief Insp. Fandoh said someone saw the accused and alerted the complainant, and with the help of a colleague taxi driver, they chased the accused to the “19-steps” – Akwatialine, where they saw him removing the stolen car’s battery.
The prosecution said the complainant and colleague driver raised the alarm, which attracted people to the scene, and they assisted in arresting the accused and handed him over to the police.
The duplicate ignition key was seized from the accused.
