Court remands impostor

Tarkwa, (W/R) July 11, GNA – Charles Oppong Assah, 35, was on Wednesday remanded in prison custody for attempting to defraud a Chief. His plea was not taken and the court, presided over by Mr. John Aject Nasam ordered him to reappear on Thursday, July 14.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Asamoah of Tarkwa Police said the accused, on June 14, 2005 went to the house of the complainant Nana Kwabena Angu III, Chief of Awudua to present himself as the son of former Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpohor Wassa East constituency, Maj.(rtd) Samuel Amponsah to ask for two million cedis.

The accused told Nana that he (the accused) was a student of Enchi Training College and was sent by his father, to collect two million cedis from Nana to enable him (the accused) to buy some textbooks. On the first day the accused introduced himself to Nana’s watchman as the son of the former MP when Nana was asleep.

The following day the accused again went to Nana’s house where he met Nana and introduced himself as a student of Enchi Training College and a son of Maj. Amponsah.

Chief Inspector Asamoah said Nana who does not know the boy quickly organized two million cedis for him, based on the good relationship between Nana and Maj. Amponsah.

The Chief Inspector said before Nana would hand over the money to the accused, a witness alerted Nana that the accused was an imposter.

The accused realizing that somebody knew him asked permission that he was going to bring his bag and ran away but Nana lodged a complaint and he was later arrested by the Police.
