Court remands farmer for fraud

Mankranso (Ash), June 23, GNA – A magistrate court at Mankranso on Wednesday remanded in prison custody, Kwame Kyei, a 26-year-old farmer, for defrauding a maize seller at Mfensi in the Atwima-Nwabiagya district of Ashanti of 2.7 million cedis.

Kyei pleaded guilty and will re-appear on July 12. Police Inspector Abraham Agyei-Mensah told the court, presided over by Mr Frank Owusu-Afriyie that on May 3, this year, Kyei told Madam Abena Agyeiwaa, the complainant at Abuakwa that, he had maize at Asempaneye for sale.

Insp. Agyei-Mensah said on May 26, at about 0700 hours, the accused collected 100,000 cedis from the complainant and bought a cutlass and herbicide.

The prosecutor said both the accused and the complainant boarded a vehicle to Asempaneye for her (complainant) to buy maize. Inspector Agyei-Mensah said they alighted at Topman Junction, on the Asempaneye road and when they branched into a footpath the accused snatched the money from the complainant fled. Kyei went into hiding until June 16, this year when he was spotted and arrested at Toase near Nkawie.
