Court remands fake police officer

A 45-year-old man who posed as a police officer and duped one Georgina Mprah of GH¢1,200.00 under the pretext of getting her enlisted into the Ghana Police Service, has appeared before a Kumasi Circuit Court.

Kwadwo Afriyie is facing charges of impersonation and defrauding by false pretense.

He pleaded not guilty and was ordered to be kept in police custody to assist in further investigations. He will reappear on August 20.

Police Chief Inspector Archibald Kwesi Fandoh told the court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amo-Yartey, that Georgina is with the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) at Nsuta.

Somewhere in year 2011, the accused introduced himself to her as a police officer who could get her employed into the Ghana Police Service. She became interested and he demanded that Georgina paid GH¢1,200.00 to facilitate the employment process.

The prosecution said Afriyie went into hiding so Georgina made a formal report to the Police leading to his arrest on August 3.

Copies of police recruitment and laboratory report forms together with other documents were retrieved from him.

Afriyie told the court that he did not act alone and claimed a certain man in Accra was part of the deal.

The court asked him to lead the investigator to the said person and warned he could be charged for deceiving a public officer, if found that he told a lie.
