Court remands baby thief

A circuit court at Takodadi remanded Mary Nyamekey, a 21-year-old trader, for allegedly stealing a baby boy.

She pleaded guilty to the charge.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Richard Boatey, told the court presided over by Mr. Charles Bamfo Nimako that the mother of the baby, Gladys Yamson, 18, who just completed Assaikai Methodist Junior High School, gave birth to the baby during the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination.

The prosecution said Nyamekey loitered around Jemima Clinic at Anaji in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, where Yamson gave birth to the baby.

DSP Boatey said when Yamson was attending to nature’s call, Nyamekey pretended she was caressing the baby to sleep when he was crying, and bolted with him.

The prosecution said authorities of the maternity home reported the matter to the police, and upon a tip-off, Nyamekey was arrested at the boyfriend’s home at Kwesiminstim in possession of the baby.

DSP Boatey said when the police interrogated Nyamekey about the case, she said she sympathised with the baby when he was crying.

The accused said she took the baby home to take care of him and that she planned to return him to the mother later.
