Court remands 67 year-old beggar for defilement

Cape Coast, April 11, GNA – A circuit court in Cape Coast on Monday remanded a 67-year-old beggar in prison custody for allegedly defiling an 11 year-old girl.

Kwaku Grunshie’s plea was not taken and he will reappear on Monday, April 25.

Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo, prosecuting, told the court that Grunshie subsisted on begging at the Cape Coast Victoria Park, while the victim, also a resident of Cape Coast, sold a Hausa delicacy, called ‘dakoa’ at the park.

He said on Tuesday, April 5, at about 1530 hours, the accused bought 5,000 cedis worth of dakoa from the girl and asked her to follow him for payment.

The Court heard that on reaching an obscure area, the accused asked the girl to undress, as a condition for payment.

Chief inspector Amonoo said the girl refused, but Grunshie forcibly removed her panties and sexually abused her, amid screams by the girl, until some passers-by came to her aid.

The witnesses subsequently took Grunshie and the girl to the police station and a medical report issued on the victim later indicated that she had been defiled, according to Chief Amonoo.
