Court jails unemployed 20 years for robbery

An Accra circuit court on Wednesday sentenced Aziz Bashiru, unemployed, to 20 years imprisonment for robbery and causing harm.

Aziz was sentenced to 20 years for robbery and five years for causing harm, both sentences will run concurrently.

He pleaded not guilty.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ernest Acheampong told the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri that there are two complainants in the case the first is a student of University of Professional Studies, and the second an apprentice.

He said on October 9 the first complainant returned from school but found his door locked, so he waited outside browse with his LG mobile phone awaiting the opening of the door.

The prosecution said whilst browsing, the convict, holding a locally made pistol, emerged and threatened to kill him if he refused to surrender to him his phone and he handed them over.

DSP Acheampong said Aziz later attacked the second complainant, who was in the company of her boyfriend, pulled the pistol on them and ordered them to surrender whatever they had on them.

“The boyfriend ran away leaving behind the girlfriend, who handed over her Samsung mobile and GH¢150.00 to the convict,” he said.

He said on receipt of the news, a witness in the community mobilized men and caught up with the convict but he struggled with them.

The convict inflected deep cuts on the left wrist of the witness with a cutlass concealed in his pair of trousers.

The prosecution said when he was searched the pistol and the mobile phone of the first complainant were found on him and he was sent to the Nima Police Station.
